Biography of Private James Davidson Mill

James was born in 1895 in Glasgow, son of a minister William Alexander Mill. His father’s parish was in Govan, and he lived in Nithsdale Road in Dumbreck. He enrolled in a Pure Science degree course at the University of Glasgow in 1912, studying Chemistry and Maths in his first year, followed by Physics and Astronomy and more Maths in his second year.

Enlistment prevented him completing his BSc degree, and he was sent to France. His final encounter was during fighting at Loos on the 26th September 1915. He was unaccounted for and therefore presumed killed; he is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
