Biography of 2nd Lieutenant Frank W Saunders
Francis William Saunders was born on the 1 August 1881 in Kingarth on the Isle of Bute. He was the son of John, a minister, and Katherine Evans Saunders. He was educated at Rothesay Academy, Isle of Bute and at the University of Glasgow where he was awarded an MA in 1902 and a BDin 1905. He studied a number of subjects including Latin, Greek, Moral Philosophy, Maths, English, Divinity, Church History and Biblical Criticism. He was awarded several class prizes for his studies pertaining to his BD
After graduating in 1905 he went on to become the minister of Anwoth Parish Church. In 1908 he married Janet Cochrane Meiklejohn. Francis enlisted with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during the First World War where he became 2nd Lieutenant. He was killed in action on the 1 August 1918 aged 37. He is buried at Oulchy-le-Chateau and is commemorated on the Anwoth Parish Church memorial, the Kingarth Parish War Memorial, and on the Church of Scotland Ministers Memorial in St.Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh.
