2nd Lieutenant Geoffrey Arthur Chapman
Biography of 2nd Lieutenant Geoffrey Arthur Chapman
Geoffrey Arthur Chapman was born on the 29th July 1886 to Kate Ellen and Walter Chapman in Croydon, England, although Walter worked as a Marine Superintendent in Southampton. Presumably he then moved, as Geoffrey was educated at Kelvinside Academy in Glasgow.
In 1906 he came to the University of Glasgow for a single year to study Mercantile Law at Accountants Hall before taking an apprenticeship as an accountant with Messrs Brown, Fleming and Murray. He then went to work in Burma for six years.
During his time in Burma, Geoffrey was a member of the Burma Volunteer Rifles. Perhaps motivated by the war, in 1915 he came back to Glasgow and was a member of the Officer Training Corps, attending the School of Instruction for Young Officers at the University of Glasgow between September and October 1915. He was then gazetted to the 11th Bn. The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) as a 2nd Lieutenant.
2nd Lieutenant Geoffrey Arthur Chapman was killed in action on the 28th March 1916, aged 29, and is buried in Rifle House Cemetery in Hainaut, Belgium.
