Lieutenant Hugh Bankhead
Biography of Lieutenant Hugh Bankhead
Hugh Bankhead was born on the 8th of November 1890 in Cardonald, Renfrewshire. His father’s name was William Thomson Bankhead and he was a minister at Ibrox United Presbyterian Church, and also a graduate of the University of Glasgow.
In 1912 Hugh enrolled in Glasgow University in the faculty of medicine aged 21. He lived at 3 Dumbreck Road, Ibrox, Glasgow for his first three years of study. He signed up to take Zoology, Physics and Junior Anatomy in his first year. In his second and third years he took Anatomy, Practical Anatomy and Chemistry. He took an exam in Botany in October of 1914 but he did not register for the academic year 1914/15 as by this time World War 1 had broken out.
From at least 1914 Hugh was a member of the University’s Officers Training Corps and he reached the rank of temporary lieutenant with them on the 27th of Sept 1916. He was in the 10th Battalion Border Regiment, a Training Reserve. He saw action in the 23rd Division Unit, 102nd Brigade as a permanent Lieutenant. In 1918 he was admitted to military hospitals stricken with the flu. Hugh survived the war and in October of 1919 he re-joined the University, aged 28, taking the same classes in the medical faculty as his third year. He took exams in March of 1920 in Botany and Chemistry that completed the first professional examination of a medical degree. Between 1920 and 1927 he studied a great range of subjects including Physiology, Pathology, Materia Medica and Therapeutics, Surgery, Medical Jurisprudence and Public Health, Diseases of the Throat and Nose, Midwifery, Clinical Obstretics, Pharmacology and Diseases of the Skin. In 1923 he gained a second class certificate from William S. Syme for study in the Diseases of the Throat and Nose. The length of his study may be attributed to a part-time attendance, he was working as he studied to fund himself. In 1925 to 1926 he lived and worked in Gartnavel Mental Asylum as a Clinical Clerk. His first registered address after the war is 49 Carnarvon Street, Glasgow in 1919 but for every subsequent year he lived at 25 Bank Street, Hillhead, Glasgow.
He graduated 17th of October 1927 with a MB ChB, a Bachelor of Medicine. After graduating he lived with his father first in Airliewood, Ibrox, Glasgow then from 1934 at 425 Shields Road, Glasgow. He entered a partnership with a Newcastle doctor. Between 1936 and 1940 he lived at 234 Hawkshill Terrace, Cornsay, Durham working at a practice in Cornsay. He died on the 25th of August in 1940 in Durham aged 49.
