George Williamson Borthwick was born on the 3rd February 1896 in 3 Janefield Avenue, Dennistoun, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. George was one of four brothers, the third son born to Margaret McFadyen Borthwick (nee Burnside) who married George Williamson Borthwick senior in Glasgow in 1890, an Assistant Schoolmaster, of Kenilworth in Bishopbriggs. He intended to study at the University of Glasgow and took the preliminary examinations there.

He was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 6th Bn. The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and was killed in action on 28th June 1916 aged 20 years old. 2nd Lieutenant George Williamson Borthwick is remembered on the Loos Memorial.
