Biography of Lieutenant Elias H Jones

Lieutenant Elias Henry Jones graduated MA from the University of Glasgow in 1906. He was born on the 21st September, 1883 in Aberystwyth, the eldest son of the philosopher Professor Henry Jones and Annie Walker. His brothers, James Walker Jones and Arthur Meredydd Jones, also attended University and appear on the Roll of Honour.

During the First World War Lieutenant Elias Henry Jones served with the Indian Army of Reserve Officers, where he was commissioned as a private solider. He was taken prisoners by the Turks after the fall of Kut-el-Amara, and survived a march on 700 miles to Yozgad. Held captive for 3 years, he and a fellow comrade escaped two weeks before the Armistice. He survived the war and went on to recount his war experience in the highly successful book entitled The Road to Endor (1919).
