Lieutenant John James Craik Henderson

Biography of Lieutenant John James Craik Henderson

John Henderson was born in Penicuik, Midlothian on 21st December 1890 to Agnes Craik and Robert Jenkinson Henderson. He was educated at George Watson’s College Edinburgh. His father was a merchant, retired by the time John began his studies at the University of Glasgow in 1911 and by that time the family home was at 61 Rowallan Gardens, Jordanhill. John chose to study for a BL degree and he did well. In 1911, at the end of his first year he was 7th equal in Civil Law. The following year he took 3rd place in Sir William Gloag’s Scots Law class, as well as Honours in an examination in the same subject for prizes offered by the Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow. He graduated in November 1914 after passing Conveyancing and before setting out for the war. He was by then an apprentice with Kidstons and Co. He took a commission in the Royal Scots in 1914.

He served in the 8th Battalion (Territorial) Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) for the duration of the war, attaining the rank of Captain before being demobbed in 1919. He returned to take up a very successful career in law and public life. He served as Professor of Mercantile Law at the University of Glasgow from 1929-1940. He was Chairman of Law Union and Rock Insurance Company, and Director of Solar Industries and other companies. During the Second World War he served as a member of the Conscientious Objectors Tribunal for South-west Scotland from 1939-1940, and as a Conservative MP for North-East Leeds from 1940-1945. In addition to a passion for politics he worked as Chairman or President of a number of important public organisations — the Glasgow YMCA, Glasgow Old People’s Welfare Committee and the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals. For his services to Franco-Scottish friendship he was awarded the Legion of Honour. He was knighted in 1953.

In what time he had for recreation, he enjoyed a game of golf and played at Balmore when he was in Glasgow. Sir John died in Sussex in November 1971.
