Thomas Leslie Jackson

In 1909 he came to the University of Glasgow for the first time, taking the Physical Laboratory class. He then came back in 1911-1914 and took subjects such as Chemistry and Natural Philosophy with the the intention of earning a degree in Naval Architecture although he never graduated. During his time at university he was a member of the Officer Training Corps.

Thomas served in the 9th Cheshire Regiment and rose to the rank of Captain. The regiment trained on Salisbury Plain and in Basingstoke before landing in Boulogne on 19th July 1915. He took part in diversionary action at Pietre during the Battle of Loos and also fought at the Battle of the Somme where he died during the second day of fighting on 2nd July 1916. Only a month earlier he had been awarded the Military Cross. He is buried in the Gordon Dump Cemetery at Ovillers-la-Boiselle, and his headstone reads, 'in his keeping'.
