Gavin Black Motherwell McMurdo
Gavin Black Motherwell McMurdo was born on 21st May 1899, and was the youngest son of John and Jeannie McMurdo. Gavin (known as Guy) was the youngest of four children, and grew up with his brothers George, James, and John at the family home of Dunnvale, Airdrie.
Guy was educated at Kelvinside Academy, before joining the University of Glasgow's Officers Training Corps at the age of 17. He served with the Red Cross for seven months, before returning to the OTC in 1917.
Guy joined the Royal Naval Air Service in Greenwich on the 24th February 1918, shortly before it became the RAF in April 1918. Lieutenant Gavin Black Motherwell McMurdo was killed in a flying accident on 27th September 1918. He is buried at New Monkland Cemetery, and remembered on the University of Glasgow and Kelvinside Academy War Memorials.
