James Anderson

James Anderson was born in Cathcart in Glasgow, in 1897, son of Helen Beveridge Anderson and John Swan Anderson, an Ironmonger. They had been born in Tillicoultry but moved to Glasgow just before he was born and lived in ‘Cambus’ 58 Dixon Avenue in Glasgow.
He went to school at Shawlands Academy on the southside of Glasgow and by the time he enrolled at the University to study Maths and French, in session 1914/15, his father had retired.
James enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry (Glasgow Highlanders) as a Private, and he was with D Company in the 9th Battalion when he was killed in action at Clery on 28th February 1917. He is buried in the Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension.
As well as the University Roll of Honour, he is also included on the Shawlands Academy War Memorial and the City of Glasgow Roll of Honour. Although his parents had moved from Tillicoultry before he was born, he is also remembered in a memorial document ‘Hillfoots Armed Forces Fatalities 1914-1919’.
