John Stevenson Brown was born in 1882, and was the son of County Councillor William Stevenson Brown and Mary Brown (nee Gillies). He grew up in Giffnock, where he lived with his parents and siblings – one of whom, James, also went on to study at the University of Glasgow. He was educated at Glasgow High School, where he played Rugby as a member of the school team.
John matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1902, at the age of twenty, where he enrolled to study Law. In his first year and only year of University, he took a course in Scots Law. This may have been as part of a legal apprenticeship with Messrs Carruthers and Gemmill, which he began in 1901. Having completed his apprenticeship, he then began to practice for himself.
The 16th Bn. of the Highland Light Infantry was formed in Glasgow in September 1914, shortly after the outbreak of war. While serving in this battalion John earned the rank of Corporal. Corporal John Stevenson Brown was killed on the 3rd April 1917, while carrying a military message to the Front. The Giffnock memorial states that he 'gallantly volunteered to take [a] message under shell-fire'. He is buried at the Savy British Ceremony in Picardie, France, and is remembered on the University of Glasgow Roll of Honour and the Giffnock War Memorial.
