On this day in 1657:

Cromwell's Charter
Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland, granted to the University the Bishopric of Galloway with its abbey and priory, and a revenue of up to £200 per annum of the deanery and sub-deanery of Glasgow, with the churches that belonged to the former dean and chapter of Glasgow, as well as the churches of Peebles and Maybole and the abbacy of Corseraguel. Cromwell also granted the vacant stipends of other churches, confirmed the immunities and exemptions that had been granted by monarchs in the past and declared that the University should remain free of all tributes, collections and taxations.

The Faculty was informed that Mr Fra Hanksee of London had sent a box of instruments to the University "towards compleating the apparatus for experiments... the price whereof according to his account amounts to £28.2s (sterling)."
