Atlantic Cable
The final link of the Atlantic cable was laid at Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. Professor William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin, was a consultant to the Atlantic Telegraph Company and was knighted for his services in laying the cable and "in recognition of your high position in science and classical attainments".

First Women Graduates
Queen Margaret College students Marion Gilchrist and Alice Lilian Louisa Cumming graduated MB, CM. They were the first women to obtain medical degrees from a Scottish university. The Scotsman reported that the capping of the women at the graduation ceremony was greeted with "great enthusiasm" by their fellow-graduands and by the audience seated in the Bute Hall galleries, and that "even the venerable professors and lecturers were infected with the prevailing enthusiasm and applauded vigorously."
