Natural Philosophy

An Additional Chair of Natural Philosophy was created in 1964/5.

The Chair was approved on 29th October 1965 and the terms of the founding Ordinance allowed the naming of the Chair to be flexible. This allowed the current postholder to have a relevant name for the Chair without a formal change being required in constitutional documents.

It was first occupied in 1984 by Professor John Brown and referred to as the Chair of Astrophysics during his tenure. He was subsequently appointed as the Regius Chair of Astronomy in 1996.
