Rutherford McCowan Building

Description

The University of Glasgow campus at Dumfries is housed in the Rutherford McCowan Building, a refurbished Victorian block. The refurbishment of the glass, sandstone and stainless steel link building was completed by Page and Park in association with Robert Potter and Partners in September 2000.

The refurbishment project created a central foyer/atrium area to join two existing buildings together. The two buildings have different ceiling heights, being built in very different architectural eras, and so although both buildings have three floors, ground, first and second there appears to be four. The Rutherford McCowan project won an RIBA award and is featured in the book ‘Scotland’s 100 Best New Buildings’.

Spaces on the ground floor of Rutherford McCowan are being reconfigured to create new social and study areas and a new cafe.
