West Medical Care Centre (former Beatson Oncolgy Centre)

Description

The West Medical Care Centre was part of the Western Infirmary. It is now closed and its services have been moved to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The West Medical Care Centre building is located next to the Anderson College building. It was formerly known as the Beatson Oncology Centre, named after surgeon George T. Beatson, until the construction of the new Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre at Gartnavel Hospital. The West Medical Care Centre comprises several building phases. The first phase was built in the 1960s in a simple post-war manner. The building originally had a T-plan with only the central north-south range extending south from the entrance block. This central block has five storeys the top of which is designed as a post-Modern style pediment facing Dumbarton Road. The building is clad partly in rubble but the majority is covered in ashlar. A pair of extra ranges was added to the building in the late 1980s and at this time a pitched roof was added to the 1960s north-south range. The exterior of the 1980 extensions is clad in red brick.
