John Ferguson Gartshore

Biography of John Ferguson Gartshore

John Ferguson Gartshore graduated MA from the University in 1884.

He became a United Freed Church of Scotland Missionary, firstly posted to Old Calabar, modern day Akwa Akpa, in Nigeria. He then went on to Jamaica, where he would spend over 43 years in service. Gartshore was secretary of the Board of Management that established the Jamaica High School for Girls, where two of his daughters, Janet and Margaret, worked as the first Headmistresses. The library's stained glass window is dedicated to his memory.
