Biography of William Anderson

Anderson was born in Girvan in 1846. Anderson studied medicine at the University of Glasgow, where he earned First Class certificates in chemistry and anatomy. He graduated in 1867.

The Bain Johnston Company hired Anderson following his graduation and sent him first to Port de Grave and then Brigus, Newfoundland. He lived a time in Brigus, where he married Sarah Wilcox, daughter of the magistrate, and appears to have trained aspiring physicians. He was hired by the Anglo-American Telegraph Company and relocated to Heart’s Content in 1877. Anderson was involved with treating survivors of the Trinity Bay Disaster of 1892.

A father of ten, he sent three Newfoundland-born sons, and a grandson to study medicine at Glasgow: Thomas Anderson (MB 1901), John Wilcox and Arthur Roland (MB CM 1896), and Thomas Goodwillie Anderson (MB ChB 1933).
