Biography of Anthony Hedley

Anthony Johnson Hedley (1941-2014) joined the University in 1983 as Titular Professor of Community Medicine. He held the Henry Mechan Chair of Public Health from 1984 to 1988.

Anthony Hedley was born 8 April 1941 in Lancashire to Thomas, a chemical engineer, and Winifred. He was educated at Rydal School, Colwyn Bay, North Wales and was a graduate in Medicine of the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

In his early career, he specialised in internal medicine and endocrinology before moving to the field of public health and preventive medicine. He was appointed Lecturer in Community Medicine at the University of Aberdeen in 1974. This was followed by a post as Senior Lecturer in Community Health at the University of Nottingham from 1976 to 1983. Anthony Hedley was inducted as a fellow of the Faculty of Public health of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 1981.

In 1988, Hedley left the University to take up the post of Professor of Community Medicine at the University of Hong Kong. He was head of the department of Community Medicine from 1988-2000 and continued as a Chair professor until retirement in 2010.

Hedley's main areas of interest and research included tobacco control, the health effects of air pollution, the evaluation of healthcare delivery and postgraduate medical education.

In recognition of his contributions to public health, Anthony Hedley was awarded the World Health Organisation Medal in 1999 and the HKSAR Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2000.

Professor Anthony Johnson Hedley died on 19 December 2014.
