Biography of Professor Ian T. Jackson MD
Ian Jackson was a craniofacial and reconstructive surgeon who worked in both Scotland and the United States of America.
Ian graduated from Glasgow with his medical degree in 1959. He became a consultant plastic surgeon in 1968. Working at Canniesburn Hospital, he developed new techniques in cleft lip and palate surgeries, and his innovations in reconstructive surgery.
In 1979 he became Chairman of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at The Mayo Clinic, moving to Rochester, Minnesota, USA. There, he instituted both a Clinical Fellowship and Research Fellowship and taught extensively. In 1989 he moved to Michigan and founded The Craniofacial Institute at Providence Hospital in Southfield shortly afterwards.
His surgical innovations were developed to better the lives of his patients: babies born with cleft Lip and Palate, craniofacial deformities, adults with base skull tumors, and deformity resulting from disease and trauma.
After living with Alzheimer's disease for over a decade, Professor Ian T Jackson MD FRCS FACS died on Sunday 2nd August 2020 at his home in Michigan.
