Biography of Duncan MacQuarrie

Duncan MacQuarrie graduated from the University of Glasgow on the 5th of July, 1968, with an M.A.. He was born on the 17th of April, 1946, in Tobermory, on the Isle of Mull. His father, also named Duncan, worked as a head teacher, and the family lived at the Schoolhouse in Salen, on the east coast of the island.

Duncan attended primary school in Tobermory, while his secondary education was conducted on the mainland at Oban High School. During his time at Oban High School he was appointed School Prefect, as well as Vice President of the Debating Society. On his application form for the University of Glasgow he writes that his interests are reading historical novels and Gaelic prose.

Duncan first matriculated at the University of Glasgow in the 1964-65 session, aged 18. In his first year he took classes in Gaelic, English, and History, and was awarded the Magnus MacLean Memorial Prize, as well as a First Class Certificate, for his performance in Gaelic. In the following academic year he was awarded the Weston Robertson Memorial Prize, at a value of £22, for higher Gaelic. Duncan continued to excel academically, and graduated on the 5th of July 1968 with an Honours degree in Celtic.

Upon graduating, Duncan moved back to Mull, where he began work as a teacher. He became Chair of the Trustees of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig in 1978, a position which he held until 1983. He was employed as a Gaelic teacher and Assistant Rector at Inverness Royal Academy, and later an Assistant Rector at Charleston Academy in Inverness. Duncan went on to become HM Inspector of Schools with national responsibility for Gaelic, and was involved in a number of developments relating to Gaelic and Gaelic education. In 2013 he was awarded the honour, Sàr Ghàidheal, by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, for his contribution to Gaelic culture, language, and education. In 2018 the first road in the new Kilbeg Village development on Skye was named in his honour.

Duncan MacQuarrie died at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, on 2nd of June 2019.
