Richard Ikponmwosa Akpata was born on the 8th of October 1932 in Benin City, Nigeria. His father, Johnson Ogualeye Akpata, was a Cocoa Farmer. His family address was 17 Ibiwe Street, Benin City. Akpata studied at Benin Government School and King’s College Lagos. Before matriculating into Glasgow University, Akpata spent a year studying Medicine at University College, Ibadan, Nigeria.

Akpata studied Medicine and Veterinary at Glasgow University between 1954 and 1961, having gained his BVMS on the 14th January 1961. Akpata first matriculated aged 23 in the 1954 to 1955 session. During his first year, he took classes in Zoology, Botany, Physics, and Chemistry, and resided at Horselethill House, Glasgow, W2. In his second year, Akpata resided at 9 Windsor Terrace, Glasgow, N.W. and took classes in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Histology. Akpata gained a First Class Certificate in Zoology. Beyond his studies, Akpata represented the University in Track and Field, finishing third place in the Long Jump in the 1955 Universities Championships.

In his subsequent years of study, Akpata also took classes in Materia Medica, Pathology, Bacteriology, Surgery, Parasitology, Medicine, and Obstetrics. Akpata lodged at 23 Lilybank Gardens, Glasgow, in his final year of study during the 1960 to 1961 session. Akpata was in receipt of a bursary from the Western Nigerian Government and the Nigerian Office.

After graduation in 1961, Akpata returned to Nigeria, where he worked for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture (Veterinary Dept.) in Lagos. He then became a Veterinary Surgeon in Yaba, Lagos, opening the first private Veterinary Clinic and Practice. There he cared for a host of pets, from dogs to chimpanzees, and was responsible for the maintenance of polo ponies and racehorses. He resided at 57 Mission Road, Benin City, Nigeria.
