Hanna Grais was born in Alexandria, Egypt. Son of a grain and cotton Merchant, Hanna moved to Glasgow in 1928 to pursue his studies in Arts and Science. He graduated from the University with an MA in 1934 and again with a B.Sc in Engineering in 1937.

In 1928 Hanna began his first classes in Engineering. In his second year he took classes in Chemistry, Drawing and Mathematics. In his third year he continued his studies in Chemistry and Mathematics and also took classes in Italian, Arabic and Physics followed by further studies in Arabic, Mathematics, Logic and Italian in his fourth year. Hanna’s younger brother Munir Grais also began attending the University at this time to study Medicine. In his final year before being awarded his MA Hanna took classes in Moral Philosophy, Logic, Higher Mathematics and Engineering production.

During his final three years at the University, before he obtainED his Engineering B.Sc in 1937, he also studied Applied Mechanics, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Design, Higher Applied Physics, Technological Dynamics and took Mechanics Laboratories.

Upon graduation Hanna Grais returned to Alexandria to work as an Engineer.
