Biography of Hubert H. O. Chalk

Hubert Chalk was a lecturer in Greek from 1950-1981.

Hubert Chalk the youngest child of an Anglican clergyman, and was educated at Marlborough College, where he was the Head of the School. Chalk gained his undergraduate degree at Christ Church, Oxford - an impressive achievement considering his studies were interrupted by a period of service in the Army.

Chalk joined the University as a lecturer in Greek on the 1st of October 1950. His passion of Greek drama and art were evident, and eventually lead to the Greek Department offering classes in Greek Civilisation in the 1970s for students who did not know the language.

Chalk died in 1981. In 1983, an anonymous donation was made to fund the Chalk Prize in his name, for Level 1 Classical Civilisation.
