Sir David Craig Carter (b 1940) was St Mungo Professor of Surgery from 1979 to 1988. In 2008, he is a Trustee and Vice Chairman of Cancer Research UK and Chairman of the Board for Academic Medicine in Scotland, the Queen's Nursing Institute in Scotland and the Scottish Foundation for Surgery in Nepal.

Carter graduated MB, ChB and MD from the University of St Andrews, and lectured at the University of Edinburgh and Makerere University in Uganda before coming to Glasgow in 1979. He left the city in 1988 to become Regius Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of Edinburgh and Honorary Consultant Surgeon at the city's Royal Infirmary.

During a distinguished career, Carter was Surgeon to The Queen in Scotland, President of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, and (from 1996-2000) Chief Medical Officer in Scotland.
