Biography of Lieutenant Malcolm James Fleming

Malcolm James Henderson Fleming matriculated at the University between 1912 and 1913 to study an Arts course.

He was born in Kilmory, Ayrshire, on 27 April 1883, son of Jane Fleming (nee Henderson) and James Fleming, a merchant. He was educated at Routenburn in Largs and later Fettes College in Edinburgh. He attended the University of Glasgow only briefly, matriculating in 1912 and receiving his commission as Lieutenant for the 5th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders shortly thereafter, on 30 October.

Fleming left Dunfermline with his regiment for Egypt on 31 May 1915. They were engaged in action in the Dardanelles from the end of June and Fleming was injured during a bombing offensive on 12 July. He died of his wounds aboard the hospital ship Asturias on 14 July 1915, aged 32, and was buried at sea. Lieutenant Fleming is memorialised at the Glasgow Necropolis.
