Biography of William Morrison Gordon

William Morrison (Bill) Gordon (1933-2012) held the Douglas Chair from 1969 to 1999. He is a graduate and honorary graduate of the University of Aberdeen. He studied at the University of Aberdeen (M.A. 1953, LL.B. 1955) and was admitted as a solicitor in 1956.

After National Service in the Royal Navy (1955-57) he was Assistant in Jurisprudence at Aberdeen University from 1957 to 1960 and moved to Glasgow in 1960 as Lecturer in Civil Law. He became Senior Lecturer in Private Law in 1965 and Douglas Professor of Civil Law in 1969, retiring in 1999 and becoming Professorial Research Fellow and subsequently Honorary Fellow in the School of Law.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1995, and awarded the honorary degree of LL.D. by the University of Aberdeen in 2005. Professor Gordon died on the 1st September 2012.
