Biography of Alan Watson

William Alexander Jardine Watson (1933- ), known as Alan Watson, is a graduate of the University who was Douglas Professor of Civil Law from 1965 to 1969.

Watson graduated from the University MA (1954) and LLB (1957) before going on to study at the University of Oxford. He lectured at Wadham College, Oxford from 1957 to 1959 and was a lecturer at (from 1959 to 1960) and Fellow of (from 1960 to 1965) Oriel College. He left Glasgow in 1968 to become Professor of Civil Law at the University of Edinburgh.

In 1979, Watson was appointed Professor of Law and Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he became Director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Legal History in 1980, Nicholas F Gallichio Professor of Law in 1984, and University Professor of Law in 1986. He was appointed Ernest P Rogers Professor of Law at the University of Georgia in 1989.
