Edward Joseph Snowden was elected as the Rector of the University of Glasgow on 18th February 2014. Snowden received 3,124 votes in the first round, and 3,347 in the second. The runner-up was Kevin Holdsworth, with 1,563.

Edward Snowden was born in North Carolina. He is a computer professional, former employee of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and a former contractor for the National Security Agency (NSA). He has received international attention for disclosing classified documents. Snowden now lives at an undisclosed location in Russia and was installed as Rector on 23rd April, speaking to those assembled in the Bute Hall via a video link .
