Biography of Tony Thomas

Joseph Anthony Charles (known as Tony) Thomas (1923-1981) was the first Douglas Professor of Roman Law at the University, from 1957 to 1964.

Thomas served in the Psychological Warfare Branch of the Intelligence Corps during the Second World War, then studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and became a barrister. In 1950, he was appointed a lecturer in Law at the University of Nottingham and he came to Glasgow in 1954 as Senior Lecturer in Law. He was Douglas Professor for seven years before his appointment to the Chair of Roman Law at the University of London in 1964.
