Biography of Major John Alexander Findlay
John Alexander Findlay graduated MA from the University in 1903 and LLB in 1905. He was born on the 16 October 1883, son of Joseph Findlay, a merchant, and Jessie B Findlay of Clairmont, Kelvinside, Glasgow.
Findlay first enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1900 to obtain his degree in the Faculty of Arts. He studied Latin, Greek, Logic, Mathematics, History, Constitutional Law and Roman Law. In the academic year 1902-3 he came 14th in the list of prizes in Civil (or Roman) Law awarded by James M Irvine. On 21 April 1903 he graduated MA from the University of Glasgow, and continued on to complete his law degree, graduating LLB on 18 April 1905. During his postgraduate studies he won numerous prizes for his academic work, including; Sixth place for Eminence in Class Examinations in Scots Law by Professor Alexander Moody Stewart (1904-5); Second place for Eminence in Examinations for prizes given by the Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow (1904-5); Fourth place for Merit Certificate in Jurisprudence (1904-5); Eminently Distinguished for Conveyancing in the prizes given by the Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow (1905-6); and was awarded First Place Medallist for First Class Certificate in Forensic Medicine by Professor John Glaister (1905-6). In 1904, whilst studying, Findlay was also working as a Law Apprentice at 115 St Vincent Street, Glasgow.
After leaving education he was officially admitted to be a law agent in Scotland on 1 April 1912.
On 8 May 1906 Findlay was granted the position of Second Lieutenant and was then promoted to the position of Captain of the Highland Infantry on 5 June 1912. On the 20 July 1915 Findlay was promoted to the rank of temporary Major.
Major Findlay was killed in action in Gaza, Palestine on 8 November 1917 and was buried in Gaza War Cemetery. Findlay was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Order on the 1 January 1918.
