Biography of John Blacklock

John William Stewart Blacklock (1896-1973) was a graduate of the University. He was the first person to be appointed Gardiner Lecturer in the Pathology of Diseases of Infancy and Childhood when the lectureship was founded in 1928. He held the St Mungo-Notman Chair of Pathology from 1937 to 1948.

Blacklock's medical studies at the University were interrupted by the First World War. He graduated MB ChB with honours in 1920 after service in the Royal Navy during the war. He graduated MD with honours in 1931. He began his career in pathology in the University Department of Pathology at the Western Infirmary with Sir Robert Muir. He later worked as pathologist to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. He was well known for his early work on primary tuberculosis of children and for his contribution to paediatric pathology.

Blacklock left the University in 1948 to take up the Chair of Pathology in the University of London at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College. Following his move to London, he continued his work on tuberculosis and carried out research on lung cancer.
