Biography of Hugh Macdonald
Hugh John Macdonald (1940- ) was Gardiner Professor of Music at the University from 1980 until 1987.
Macdonald went to Pembroke College, Cambridge to study Mathematics but switched to Music, graduating MA in 1961. He was subsequently awarded a second MA (1965) and a PhD (1969). He was a Fellow of Pembroke, 1963 to 1971, and an assistant and then lecturer in Music from 1966 to 1971. He was a lecturer in Music and Fellow of St John's College, Oxford, from 1971 until he came to Glasgow in 1980.
In 1987, Macdonald went to the USA as Avis Blewett Professor of Music at Washington University, St Louis. He was Chair of the Music Department from 1997 to 1999.
