Biography of Graham Wilson
Graham Malcolm Wilson (1917-1977) was Regius Professor of Practice of Medicine at the University from 1967 until his death in 1977.
Wilson attended Edinburgh Academy and studied at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MB ChB 1940 (as the Ettles Scholar, the most distinguished student of the year), BSc 1946, MD 1950 (gold medal) and DSc 1965. He was elected FRCP in 1956.
He served in the Royal Air Force Medical Service during the Second World War from 1941-46 in North Africa, Italy, Egypt, Palestine and Iraq. After the war he returned to Edinburgh to complete his BSc studies in Honours Pathology that he started before the war, and in 1947 went to London to assist Sir George Pickering at St Mary's Hospital Medical School. He worked for one year at Harvard Medical School on a MRC Travelling Fellowship, and in 1950 was appointed a lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Sheffield and he was appointed Professor four years later. In 1960 he was visiting professor of medicine at the University of Adelaide, and in 1962 he gave a Bradshaw lecture on diuretics to the Royal College of Physicians in London.1967 he was appointed to the Regius Chair of the Practice of medicine in Glasgow University and also physician in charge of the Western Infirmary.
Wilson's primary research interests lay in the fields of peripheral circulation and endocrine, especially thyroid, renal and metabolic disorders and he was deeply involved in the panning of medical education. Among many offices, he was a member of the Royal Commission on Medical Education and a managing trustee of the Nuffield Foundation, as well as Chairman of the Medicines Committee in 1976.
After a nine-month illness he died the day before his 60th birthday on 15th April 1977. His wife, Dr Elizabeth Stanfield Bell Wilson, established the Graham Wilson Travelling Fellowship in his name, offering support to young members of staff who wish to visit a centre in the UK or abroad to learn specific clinical or research techniques.
