Pietro Giuliani was born on 28 May 1883 in Albany, New York. His father Carlo was a wine merchant who died before his son began attending the University.

Pietro first matriculated in 1905, aged 22, to study Medicine, graduating MB ChB on 18 April 1910.

Giulani received several prizes during his studies; they included a Second-Class Certificate in Physics under Professors Andrew Gray and George Walker (1905); a Commendation Certificate and an Anesthetic Certificate in the Junior Division of Clinical Surgery under Professor William Macewen (1908-9). He attended such classes as Botany, Zoology, Practice of Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Midwifery, Materia Medica and Therapeuticsw, and Medical Jurisprudence and Public Health.

After graduation, he moved to the medieval village of Barga, in Toscana, Italy, to begin his career in medicine. However, Giuliani returned to settle in Glasgow in 1938, where he remained for the rest of his life.
