Biography of Symington Macdonald

Symington Macdonald graduated BSc from the University in 1914. He was born on 7 September 1884 in Mount Carbon, West Virginia, son of a mining engineer by the same name, who worked in the booming coal industry of the late nineteenth-century as general manager of the Kanawha Colliery Company.

Symington enrolled at the University in 1910 to study Engineering. He was awarded several prizes for his academic performance during his studies, this included a prize for Mining under Professor Charles Latham, as well as a first prize for Professor Archibald Barr's Engineering class and for Engineering Laboratory.

Symington graduated BSc in Engineering on 20 April 1914, and followed in his father's footsteps, working as a mining engineer in Scotland. He died on 8 December 1966.

Symington married graduate Agnes Borthwick, who became a works manager at a munitions factory, in April 1920.
