Biography of George MacLellan

George Douglas Stephen MacLellan (1922-1999) was Rankin Professor of Mechanical Engineering from 1959 to 1965.

MacLellan was a native of Glasgow and a graduate of Pembroke College, Cambridge, and he was University Demonstrator and Lecturer in Engineering and then a lecturer at Cambridge from 1947 to 1959. He specialised in the field of servo-mechanisms and automatic control and automatic measurement of quality in process plants.

In 1965, MacLellan left Glasgow to become Professor and Head of Department of Engineering at the University of Leicester, a post he held until his retirement in 1988.
