Biography of Ian Sneddon
Ian Naismith Sneddon (1919-2000) was a graduate of the University and Simson Professor of Mathematics from 1956 to 1985. He was Dean of the Faculty of Science from 1970 to 1973 and Senate Assessor on the University Court from 1973 to 1977.
Sneddon graduated MA in 1940, with first class honours in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, and was awarded a Bryce Fellowship. He was subsequently awarded a DSc. He wennt on to graduate from Trinity College, Cambridge (MA, 1941) and became a Scientific Officer with the Ministry of Supply from 1942 to 1945. He worked briefly at the HH Wills Physical Laboratory in Bristol before he was appointed Lecturer in Natural Philosophy at the University in 1946.
In 1950, Sneddon went to the University of North Staffordshire as its first Professor of Mathematics and he remained there until his appointment to the Simson Chair. After leaving the University in 1985, he was Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde until 1991.
Sneddon was a member of a number of Government scientific committees, including the Council on Scientific Research and Technical Development at the Ministry of Supply, 1953 to 1956. He was a member of the Board of the Scottish National Orchestra and the Citizens Theatre and sat on the Advisory Council of Scottish Opera.
