Biography of Stanley Alstead
Stanley Alstead (1905-1992) was Regius Professor of Materia Medica at the University from 1948 until 1970.
Born in Wigan, Alstead graduated MB, ChB and MD from the University of Liverpool in 1931 and came to Glasgow as the Pollock Lecturer in Pharmacology. He served in the RAMC during the Second World War, as Officer Commanding general hospitals in Tunisia, Sicily, Belgium and Egypt, and he was mentioned in despatches. In 1946 he went to Inverness as Consultant Physician to the Highlands and Islands Medical Service, but returned to Glasgow in 1948 to occupy the Regius Chair and become senior visiting physician at Stobhill Hospital.
Alstead was President of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, 1956 to 1958. He was appointed a CBE in 1960.
