Biography of John Pateman

John Arthur Joseph Pateman (1926-2011) was Professor of Genetics at the University from 1970 to 1979.

Pateman is a graduate of University College, London and the University of Cambridge, and worked as an assistant lecturer in Genetics at the University of Sheffield from 1954 to 1958. He was Senior Lecturer in Botany at the University of Melbourne from 1958 to 1960; returned to Cambridge as Lecturer in Genetics; and then went back to Australia in 1967 as Professor of Biology at Flinders University, before coming to Glasgow in 1970.

In 1979, Pateman was appointed Professor of Genetics at Australian National University and he was appointed Executive Director of the Centre for Recombinant DNA Research there in 1982. He retired in 1988. He died, on the 18 May 2011, aged 85 years.
