Biography of Colin Smethurst
Colin Smethurst was Marshall Professor of French from 1980 to 1998.
A graduate of Keble College, Oxford (BA, 1958, Dip Ed 1960), Smethurst spent two years pursuing his studies in England and France before he became assistant lecturer in French at the University of Liverpool in 1962. He was subsequently promoted to Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer, and in 1967 was awarded a BLitt by the University of Oxford for his thesis on Stendhal and Balzac.
