Biography of John Cleland

John Cleland was Regius Professor of Anatomy at the University, 1877 to 1909.

Born in Perthshire, the son of an army surgeon, Cleland graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh and came to Glasgow as Senior Demonstrator to Professor Allen Thomson. He was appointed Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at Queen's College, Galway in 1863.

Cleland was the first to describe the curtaneous ligaments of the digits which are known today as "Cleland's ligaments", and is believed to have been the first to describe what is now known as Arnold-Chiari Malformation.
