Biography of Morris Youdelevitz Young
Morris Youdelevitz Young (born Mosche Youdelevitz), a medical pioneer in Persia, graduated from the University of Glasgow MBChB 1906. He was born 17th July 1880 in present day Ukraine and his father was Reuben Youdelevitz (1862-1933).
Young first came to the University of Glasgow in 1900 and studied medical subjects, such as Surgery and Practice of Medicine ,for six years, graduating MBChB on 17th July 1906. In the middle of his studies, in 1903, he worked as a doctor for a railway survey party in Persia.
In 1907, after graduating, Young worked for the Concessions Syndicate Ltd as a physician in Persia, providing healthcare for employees facing high temperatures, accidents, and illness as well as employee’s families and local people in the region. Young continued working for the company when the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC) was formed. Young’s medical skills improved relationships between the company and the local population and in 1911 Young was appointed as Political Officer in addition to his medical position.
Young took a sabbatical in 1910 to attended the London School for Tropical Medicine and in 1924 was manager of the Company’s newly created Medical Department.
Young returned to London in 1927 and in 1930 created a plan for the reorganisation of APOC’s medical services in Persia by upgrading buildings and improving the range and quality of healthcare. He retired from the company in 1931 although for several years remained a Political Officer and Medical Consultant.
After retirement from the oil industry Young joined the team under Sir Alexander Fleming at St Mary’s Hospital in London that was developing penicillin. During the Second World War, he worked in the Ealing sector of the Emergency Health Service’s Public Health Laboratory.
Morris Young retired in 1949 and died in 1950.
