Biography of William Lindsay Renwick

William Lindsay Renwick graduated from the University MA 1910.

He was born in 1889 in Glasgow and his father was William, and Agent. He first attended the university in the session 1907/08 and during his Undergraduate degree took classes such as Mathematics, Logic, and Moral Philosophy.

William graduated on 10 June 1910 with in ordinary MA degree. He returned in the session 1910/11 and took up classes in English and History, obtaining first class honours in his English exam. There is no record of his graduating with Honours, however he did go on to attain a DLitt in 1926, with the thesis: Edmond Spenser: an essay on Renaissance poetry and was awarded an Honorary LLD in 1953.

During his studies he won two class prizes: he came 4th in the class in 1909/10 for Education, and 2nd in the class for Honours English in 1911.

William Lindsay Renwick later became Professor of English at Edinburgh University.

Professor Renwick left his art collection to the University and it is now housed in the Hunterian Art Gallery.
