Francis Morrison graduated from the University of Glasgow with a BSc in Engineering on 18th April 1910, having been a student at the University of Glasgow since the session 1908/09.

He was born in Aberdeen on 18th October 1884, the son of Alexander Morrison, a warehouseman. Francis attended Gordon's College in Aberdeen, and was awarded a Whitworth Exhibition, value £50, for his achievements in science exams conducted by the Board of Education.

His graduate schedule indicates that he studied at the University of Aberdeen for the year 1907/08, and he transferred to Glasgow for his second year onwards. Unfortunately the records do not have any information on his reason for transfer.

His graduate schedule notes that he sat the following exams at the University of Aberdeen: Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, Physical Laboratory.

He sat the following exams during his two years at the University of Glasgow:

  • 1908/09: Electricity (Pure & Applied), Metallurgical Chemistry A&B, Engineering III, Electrical Engineering I, Engineering & Drawing, Engineering Laboratory Junior, Analytical Geometry
  • 1909/10: Engineering IV, Electrical Engineering II, Engineering & Drawings, Engineering Laboratory Senior, Applied Higher Mathematics.

He also won the following prizes:

  • 1908/09: Muir Bursary in Civil Engineering & Mechanics
  • 1908/09: Metallurgical Chemistry classes A&B, certificate of merit
  • 1908/09: Engineering III, joint first in class
  • 1908/09: Engineering II, joint second in class
  • 1908/09: Engineering drawing, joint fourth in class
  • 1908/09: Electrical Engineering I: first in class
  • 1908/09: Electricity (Pure & Applied), class prize and first class certificate
  • 1909/10: Engineering IV, fourth in class
  • 1909/10: Engineering drawing, joint fourth in class
  • 1909/10: Engineering Lab Senior: first in class
  • 1909/10: Electrical Engineering II: first in class
  • 1909/10: Higher Mathematics, joint second class prize and first class certificate.

In 1987 the Francis Morrison Award was instituted at the University of Glasgow by the GM Morrison Charitable Trust in memory of Francis. Up to five prizes are awarded annually to students in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering who have shown outstanding academic excellence in any year of the course.
