James Grant Millar was born on the 21st of May 1875 to David and Gloriana Margaret Grant Miller in Glasgow. James was the younger brother of fellow Glasgow alumni Arthur David Millar and George Grant Millar. The family resided at 10 Elmbank Crescent.

James first matriculated at the University aged 17 to study for a medical degree, undertaking classes in Botany, Zoology, Physics and Chemistry. He graduated MB in 1901. During the Second World War James served as a surgeon on the cable ship Alert in the Merchant Navy. James was killed in action on the 24th February 1945 when the ship was lost with all hands to enemy action off the French coast, leaving behind his wife Mary Graham Millar. He was aged 64. James is commemorated among the Merchant Navy losses on the memorial on Tower Hill in London.
