Biography of Robert Browning

Robert Browning was a graduate of the University and Johnstone Smith Professor of Accountancy from 1950 to 1964. He was Chairman of the University's Graduates Association, 1947 to 1952, and a Convenor of the Business Committee.

Browning graduated MA (1923), LLB (1925) and CA (1926) and became a partner in the accountancy firm John E Watson & Co in 1927. Among many public offices, he was Chairman of the East Kilbride Development Corporation from 1958 to 1969; a director of the Clydesdale Bank from 1957 to 1969 and of Malcolm Campbell Ltd from 1940 to 1969; and Vice-President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland from 1964 to 1965 and President the following year. He was appointed CBE in 1961.
