Biography of Hugh MacTavish

Hugh MacTavish was born on 22nd April 1889, the youngest son of a clerk, Donald. In 1907, after taking preliminary examinations in English, Maths, Latin and French, Hugh came to the University of Glasgow to study for an arts degree. He chose a varied program of study taking Latin and Maths in his first year and Logic, English Literature and History in his second year. In his final year, perhaps thinking about his future career as a teacher, he took Education. He graduated on 10th June 1910 with an ordinary MA.

After university Hugh taught at Rutland Crescent School. During the First World War he served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Cameronians, having been a member of the University of Glasgow Officer Training Corps. Sadly he was killed during an attack that caught his unit from three sides.
