Biography of Peter Herbert Butter
Peter Herbert Butter (1921-1999) was Regius Professor of English Language and Literature at the University, 1965 to 1986.
Butter was a graduate of Balliol College, Oxford. He served in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War and in 1951 became a lecturer in English at the University of Edinburgh. He was Professor of English at Queen's University, Belfast, from 1958 until his appointment to the Regius Chair at Glasgow in 1965.
