Biography of James Boyd of Trochrig
James Boyd of Trochrig (d 1581) was Archbishop of Glasgow and Chancellor of the University, 1573 to 1581. He was described by the regent James Melville as "a gud man and lover of lerning and of lernd men".
Boyd is believed to have studied in Spain before becoming Minister of Kirkoswald. He was promoted to the Glasgow See in 1573, probably through the influence of his uncle, Lord Boyd.
With the Rector Andrew Hay, Boyd was responsible for persuading Andrew Melville to become Principal of the University in 1574. Melville is believed to have been the architect of the Nova Erectio which re-founded the ailing University in 1577. Boyd's son Robert was subsequently Principal of the University, from 1605 to 1613.
